July 14th, 2008 @ 2:00 am - SketchbookAfter visiting my friend Cosmic Crack’s exhibit in Rotterdam past Friday, I felt inspired to get back to a project I started a long time ago back when I was at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). Max Kisman, my teacher at the time, advised me to get a sketchbook and draw in it daily. Not only was this meant as a practice to get more comfortable and skilled at drawing itself, but also to develop a visual thought process. Max himself had been keeping a visual diary for years, in which he drew a selected moment out of the day. His diary was comparable to a daily comic, his days were drawn in a cartoonish style and often even featured text balloons. I myself was more interested in conceptual pieces and typography. Therefor I decided to keep a sketchbook in which I drew random lines that I overheard, heard in popular media or simply just thought of. These lines often fit in with a certain theme , or I looked for an ability to change them visually to fit the context of the words. I kept my sketchbook going for a few months before ending up with a shoulder injury which kept my updates very limited.
Yesterday I was going through the secondhand design books at De Slegte and on my way out with 2 new additions to my collection I walked past the sketchbooks and couldn’t resist getting a new one. So here I am, ready to start over again with a visual diary of some sorts. My book won’t really have anything to do with my days/life generally but will just contain a piece every day or so, I’m not pinning myself down on actually drawing one every day. I did decide however, that I’m going to post every drawing I make in the book on this blog. I’m actually playing around with a few exhibit plans right now so some of the work might make it’s way into a show eventually, in a finished state ofcourse.
